The Barbaro Story - Dr. Hank Vaupel
For horse lovers this, year's Preakness turned from excitement to horror when Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro pulled up with a catastrophic leg fracture. A broken leg is often a direct path to euthanasia, but for Barbaro, it lead to an heroic attempt to save the limb and the life of an exceptional animal. Dr. Hank Vaupel is a 1967 graduate of the Michigan State University School of Veterinary Medicine. He's an unabashed equine enthusiast, a founding member of the Michigan Equine Partnership, and is on the Board of Directors of Canter a non profit organization dedicated to training and finding homes for retired race horses. Dr. Vaupel paints a detailed picture of what caused Barbaro's accident, what has been done to save his life, and discusses the factors that will determine his survival.
