MICHIGAN EQUINE PARTNERSHIP FORMED

LANSING--People from all walks of life, interests and economic status gathered at the Ingham County Fairgrounds recently and formed a coalition dedicated to promoting the Michigan equine industry across the state and nationally.

“The equine industry is a valuable contributor to the Michigan economy but it’s becoming increasingly competitive from state to state. Those stakeholders who want to see the horse industry thrive in Michigan must team up to ensure a healthy, business and political climate. Otherwise, other states will claim the prize,” said Larry Julian, a leading advocate for the Michigan horse industry.

Following the meeting, Brett Boyd, Riverbend Standardbreds, Hillsdale, very enthusiastically stated, “I have watched the passion and commitment Larry Julian and Val Vail-Shirey have for the industry for several years while in the legislature. I am pleased they are continuing that commitment and taking the entire equine industry to a new level with the Michigan Equine Partnership”

Whether you ride a quarter horse, sell western wear, race at a track, grow hay or practice equine medicine, the Michigan Equine Partnership (MEP) offers a united voice to:
1) increase awareness and education about the horse industry’s importance to Michigan’s economy,
2) create new equine-related jobs and economic benefits for Michigan, and
3) encourage public policy that strengthens the equine business climate in Michigan.
Michigan State University, Equine Extension Youth Specialist, Karen Waite said, “the horse industry in Michigan has historically been an incredible force when they unite for a common cause. The Michigan Equine Partnership provides continuity so that when unification is needed, the system is in place to provide it, quickly and efficiently”.

The Michigan Equine Partnership is a grassroots, membership-driven coalition with a common goal to promote equine interests, whether as a hobby or livelihood. Through county ambassadors, a speaker’s bureau, lobbying efforts and marketing, members across the state fully intend to accomplish the goals they have set forth.

“The Michigan Equine Partnership reminds me of the Chamber of Commerce, but with equine as the focus. I am impressed with the goal of all breeds and interest, direct and indirect represented as a complete industry. I believe the mission of a grassroots membership organization to educate across this state on the importance of the equine industry to Michigan jobs and economy is priceless,” said Aaron Rice, Michigan Great Lakes International and North America’s Draft Horse Association.
